Warsaw

Poland’s capital is a centre of cultural, historical and artistic importance, and is also its largest city. Located on the Vistula River, 230 miles from the Baltic Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains, both of which are tourist magnets in their own rights. But it’s Warsaw which stands out as Poland’s main tourist destination, with a population of 1.7 million and rising it’s also Europe’s seventh largest city.

Warsaw’s History – In the late 19th century Warsaw flourished under Mayor Starynkiqwicz, a Russian born general and in this time the city experienced significant technological advancements, such as its sewer and water systems being designed by the English engineer William Lindley as well as the expansion of its trams, gas works and street lighting. Fast forward to today and Warsaw has become one of the most prominent cities not just in Poland, but in the world.

Tourism – Visitors to Warsaw should visit the Palace of Art and Culture, an imposing remnant of Poland’s communist past, the Jewish Quarter and the Royal Castle in the old town. The city is also home to over 30 theatres including the Grand Theatre and the National Theatre, both of which run famous shows throughout the year as well as operas and ballets. There’s also the massive Arkadia shopping centre, housing a great mix of well known commercial brands as well as traditional smaller shops.

Pricing – Poland’s best selling point is the great value for money which is evident throughout the country, and Warsaw is no different. There are the obvious expensive areas, boutiques and restaurants, but mostly you’ll find pricing is generous and affordable. If you’re looking for cheaper areas or restaurants then try looking away from the more popular touristy areas, smaller restaurants in quiet backstreets will be cheaper and usually of a good standard.

Whenever travelling it’s advised that you take out adequate travel insurance with a reputable company such as Go Travel to avoid any unnecessary hassle should anything go wrong. Happy holidays!
