Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the 7th century and with a population today of 800,000 people. Situated on the Vistula River, the city is a great mix of culture, history and innovation. Traditionally Krakow has been well known as the centre of Polish science, art and culture. A History of Krakow – Originally established in the Stone Age Krakow was a leading trade centre by the 11th century, later to be almost entirely destroyed during the invasions of 1241, 1259 and 1287. It was rebuilt and rose again in 1364 with the creation of the University of Krakow, the second oldest university in Europe after Prague’s. Deposed as the capital in favour of Warsaw in 1596, this was not the end for Krakow as it has continued to be at the forefront of modernism and culture Tourism – With an average temperature in the summer months of 23 degrees, the city has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its mix of tradition and modern flair. Its highlights include its castle and city square, which is overlooked by many buildings of impressive architecture. You can also find the local market which is housed in a large building in the centre of the city and home to scores of small kiosks selling traditionally crafted souvenirs and foodstuffs. Pricing – The most notable thing about Poland is it’s incredible value for money. Even though some things in Krakow may be more expensive than elsewhere in the country you’ll still find some great deals. The hotels are of excellent standard as are the many bars and shops. Perhaps Krakow’s biggest strength is its cuisine and it is home to some fine eateries. From traditional hearty Polish dishes to modern nouveau cuisine, whatever you’re looking for you’ll find, with some of the best restaurants found away from the more touristy areas. As with all types of travelling, trips abroad carry a certain degree of risk whatever you’re doing. It’s therefore advised that you take out adequate travel insurance with a reputable provider such as Go Travel before you head for the airport. Happy holidays! |
